President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday commissioned the Murehwa Registry Office and E-passport and Bio- enrollment Centre in Murehwa.
The new centre not only dovetails with the National Development Strategy One (NDS1)’s modernisation agenda of achieving a digital economy but is also meant to benefit people from Mutoko, Mudzi, Uzumba, Maramba, Pfungwe and Goromonzi Districts among others in accessing civil documents
In an address to thousands of people gathered to witness the milestone event, the President stressed the importance of this milestone achievement by the Second Republic
“Vital civil registration documents such as the birth certificate and national identity card are important in the life of every person as these depict the inalienable right to a name, family, citizenship and nationality. The national identity documents further play an important part in the life of an individual from education enrollment, gaining employment, to accessing financial services and owning property.”
Government entered into a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) arrangement with a Lithuanian company Garsu Pasaulis (GP), which arrangement has resulted in the decentralisation of the Registrar-General’s Offices and issuance of e-passports. Outside Harare, e-passports are now being issued in Bulawayo and Chitungwiza, Hwange, Lupane and now Murehwa. Passport offices will not be limited to Provincial capitals only but will also be available in Districts.
“I applaud the win-win partnership between the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage and Garsu Pasaulis which has seen the successful roll-out of the e-passport and establishment of Bio-enrollment centres. I challenge the Ministry (of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage) and it’s partners to speedily establish more of these e-passport and bio-enrolment centres in other cities and districts in shortest possible time,” said the President.
