The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has released a press statement announcing the postponement of Mobile Voter Registration.
In a statement by the Acting Chief Elections Officer, J.P. Chigidji, ZEC highlighted the developments after having consulted other critical players in the voter registration process.
“The Mobile Voter Registration exercise pencilled for December 6, 2021 has been postponed to February 2022. The need to uphold inclusivity, which is one of the Commission’s core values has necessitated this postponement,” said Chigidji.
She justified the postponement as a means to allow all eligible stakeholders to acquire national identity cards which are a requisite for voter registration.
“The period initially slated for the voter registration exercise would have excluded some stakeholders without national identity cards. The postponement will also give Civil Registry enough time to prepare for the issuance of identity documents to a large period within a specified period.”
Issuance of National Identity Cards will help in facilitating the inclusion of previously excluded sections of society who must be accorded a chance to participate in the country’s democratic systems.
