Government has identified Nembudziya open grounds at Nembudziya Growth Point in Gokwe North District, as the venue for the 2025 National Independence Day Celebrations.

Speaking at the Post Cabinet briefing yesterday, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Hon Dr Jenfan Muswere said,

“An assessment visit of the Midlands Province to identify suitable venues to host the 2025 Independence Celebrations as proclaimed by President Mnangagwa at Murambinda during the 2024 celebrations was undertaken by a technical team of the Cabinet Committee on State Occasions and National Monuments.”

A technical team from the Cabinet Committee conducted an assessment tour of the Midlands Province to scout for suitable venues. They visited potential sites across three districts: Gokwe North, Gokwe South, and Mberengwa. The primary objective was to identify a space large enough (at least five hectares) to host the Independence Celebrations, including the Children’s Party and the musical gala.

The chosen venue, Nembudziya open grounds, will host the main event, while Nyamuroro High School will be the site of the Children’s Party, and Nembudziya High School Grounds will host the Independence Gala.

In addition to selecting the celebration venues, the committee recommended that historical sites of national significance within the Midlands Province be incorporated into the festivities.

Notable locations such as Mtapa Hall in Gweru, Wha Wha Prison, Connemara Prison, and Sikombela Detention Camp will be part of the Independence Torch rally route. Mtapa Hall holds special significance as the location of ZANU’s first congress in 1964, where the decision was made to take up arms against the colonial regime.

Moreover, nationalists, including the late President Robert Mugabe, were once detained at Wha Wha and Sikombela detention centres.

The Cabinet also emphasized the importance of honoring the nation’s heroes and heroines, approving the restoration of their graves at provincial and district heroes’ acres across Midlands Province.

Furthermore, the Midlands Province will see infrastructural development, particularly in the marginalised areas, as part of the Government’s “leaving no one and no place behind” mantra.

The Nhimbe/Ilima Road Rehabilitation Programme, set to be launched by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, will focus on upgrading the Kadoma- Sanyati- Gokwe-Nembudziya road, a priority project for the region. This key route will be funded by the Zimbabwe National Roads Authority (ZINARA) and supported by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, along with the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency.

This initiative is expected to enhance connectivity to the celebration venue and boost local infrastructure.

The selection of Midlands as the host of the 2025 Independence Celebrations reflects a commitment to inclusive development and ensuring that all regions of the country are part of the national celebrations.
