Mbudzi roundabout closure imminent

Mako Jerera

Civil works on the long anticipated Mbudzi interchange is proceeding at an accelerated pace, with the diversionary detour set to open on April 14, 2022.

Lead contractor, Tefoma construction has issued a statement urging motorists to look forward to the envisaged route diversion as civil works begin in earnest at the interchange.

On Thursday, April 14, 2022, all roads leading to the roundabout will be closed.

Community engagement and Liason officer for Tefoma Construction, Mr Chiwenga issued a statement explaining the modalities to motorists and the travelling public.

“Detours will be completed as alternative routes to aid in the day to day activities of residents and stakeholders. We thank you for your patience and endurance. Your compliance is appreciated as we embark on the task mandated to us,” said Mr Chiwenga.

The current construction activities are a culmination of a rigorous geotechnical survey and engineering tests, which entail obtaining soil and rock samples to determine the strength of materials to be utilized during the foundation stage.

The complicated interchange is a landmark civil engineering project, and as such it is critical that the massive reinforced concrete structure be securely attached to the bedrock so that it can withstand the constant vibration of thousands of heavy vehicles every day.

The Mbudzi interchange section will link Simon Mazorodze, Chitungwiza, and High Glen Roads, which feed traffic from western Chitungwiza and numerous ancient and new neighbourhoods into Harare city centre, as well as major national and regional traffic on the Harare-Masvingo highway.

The current traffic circle had become the most eminent nightmare for motorists in Harare as the ever increasing vehicle population demanded more efficient interchanges.
