Robert Mugabe Junior, son to the late country`s founding President Robert Mugabe today appeared at the ruling party`s star rally in St Mary`s Chitungwiza.
Robert Jr, who has rarely been seen in the public eye since 2017, was in the company of popular prophet Passion Java at the oversubscribed event.
ZANU PF National Political Commissar Dr Mike Bimha invited Robert Mugabe Jr to the podium where he endorsed the party through chanting slogans.
Speaking to media at the sidelines of the rally, Mugabe said ZANU PF is in his DNA.
“I thought I should come and support the party. Since I was born, all I knew was Zanu PF. I am a Zanu PF child. Its only right that I continue the legacy,” he said.
President Mnangagwa had a brief interaction with the 29-year-old.
They had a brief conversation, cordial in which the party`s First Secretary appeared to be saying “welcome home my son.”
ZANU PF Spokesperson Cde Chris Mutsvangwa commended the ruling party for accommodating Robert Jr.
“He is a ZANU PF child and has a ZANU PF child,” said Cde Mutsvangwa.
He described his return as heatwarming.
The youth league leadership has already indicated that they are ready to work together with Robert Jr, who once represented Zimbabwe nationally as a basketball player.
ZANU PF Acting Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs Tendai Chirau said;
“It is good to see Robert Jr, he is a youth who was studying abroad. So we are happy to see him. It is the new dispensation and ZANU PF is home to everyone.
We are hoping that we are going to work together and the skills that he has will benefit the country going forward.”
Being the eldest son of the late statesman, Robert Jr is according to tradition the surviving family head.
His return to the party means the former first family has found its way home, in ZANU PF.
