AS drug and substance abuse continues to be a thorn in the flesh for most communities, sporting activities are proving to be a powerful tool in the fight against the scourge.
It is in this regard that a sports tournament staged in Kwekwe this Saturday was used as a platform to speak against the vice.
Kwekwe Central legislator, Honourable Judith Tobaiwa “Through sports, we foster discipline, teamwork and character development, instilling in our youths the values necessary to resist the temptation of destructive behaviours.”
“When people have nothing to do, they end up engaging in dangerous activities. Some peers are busy stealing while others are wasting their lives abusing drugs and harmful substances. These sporting activities help them deal with such temptations in a big way,” added Kwekwe City Mayor, Councillor Albert Zinhanga
Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube said the government supports the anti-drugs campaign and has put in place measures to fight the scourge.
“As government, we are seized with the issue of drug and substance abuse which is threatening to destroy society. We urge the corporate world to come on board to assist us in curbing this vice. As Midlands province, we have put in place various measures to contain the rise and spread of the scourge.”
The sports gala saw up to 14 netball and football teams from various schools in Kwekwe district battling for honours at Mbizo grounds.
