Zimbabwe and Iran continue to strengthen cooperation in various sectors following the successful 9th Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation held in Tehran from 1st to 5th February 2023.

The two countries identified areas of cooperation in three committees – Political and Diplomatic, Trade, Commerce, Banking, Customs, Investment, Energy, Agricultural Cooperation, and Transport, Housing, Science, Culture, Health, Judicial and Social Cooperation. Among the outcomes, Zimbabwe and Iran agreed to convene a Joint Commercial and Industrial Committee to boost trade and commerce between the two countries.

Speaking at a Post-Cabinet Briefing on Tuesday, Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa was upbeat about prospects for strengthening of the two countries’ cooperation in trade and commerce.

“We are excited about the prospects of the Joint Commercial and Industrial Committee, which we believe will provide an avenue for the growth of trade and commerce between Zimbabwe and Iran,” she said.

“The two countries’ respective chambers of commerce will cooperate at the private sector level, and Zimbabwe’s export promotion body, Zimtrade signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Iran Trade Promotion Organisation. The two sides are also considering exchanging media content, with two Memoranda of Understanding in the information and broadcasting sector under consideration,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

“In the transportation sector, Iran expressed its readiness to supply rail equipment to Zimbabwe, and a draft Memorandum of Understanding submitted by Zimbabwe is under consideration. In the scientific and cultural area, the two countries agreed to conduct joint research in nanotechnology, biotechnology, information and communication technology, and introduce the Persian Language in Zimbabwe’s educational institutions for research purposes.”

The 10th Session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation between Zimbabwe and Iran will be hosted by Zimbabwe at a date to be agreed, according to the report.

“The harmonious and cordial environment of the commission is a testament to the excellent relations between Zimbabwe and Iran. The successful meeting has opened up new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, science, and culture,” said Mutsvangwa.
