Zimbabwe’s long-distance runner, Isaac Mpofu, has departed for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where he is set to compete next week.

Under the guidance of coach, Benson Chauke, Mpofu has undergone rigorous training to prepare for the prestigious event.

As the only local athlete to have qualified for the Olympics, Mpofu carries the nation’s hopes on his shoulders.

“It is everyone’s dream to win a medal but I believe I will bring good results. If I can reach the top 10 and hopefully things go well I’m fighting to win a medal,”

His impressive track record, including a bronze medal at the 2023 African Games in Ghana and participation in the World Athletics Championships in 2019 and 2022, has set the stage for a strong performance in Paris.

The 35-year-old made history by becoming the first Zimbabwean to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after meeting the qualifying standard for the marathon race, with a 12th-place finish at the 2022 Valencia Marathon.

He is now poised to take on the world’s best Olympic athletes.

Scheduled to compete on the 10th of August, Mpofu is determined to fly the country’s flag high.
