A 24 year old man from Taateya Village in Ward 4, Hwedza district has been arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Environmental Management Agency on allegations of starting a veld fire.

The fire, whose start is being attributed to Farayi Chimhavi destroyed 800 hectares of forest and gardens which had yet to be harvested horticultural products.

Chimhavi was arrested yesterday and taken to Hwedza Police Station.

During questioning, Chimhavi said the fire was meant to clear a small patch of land to mould bricks for a local farmer.

The fire got out of control and resulted in the destruction of vegetation and farm produce.

Although the destruction of property was mitigated, about 20 hectares worth of tobacco nurseries were destroyed.

The Environmental Management Agency’s field office responded by carrying out an awareness campaign in the affected village.

Mr Liberty Dera sensitized the community on the effects of veld fires on the environment and livelihoods.

The sensitisation meeting had villagers from villages 10 and 11 raising a number of issues. Chief amongst them has been indigenous fire wood poaching rising rapidly.

Trucks are reported to be driving in at night to collect wood from indigenous trees.
