The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland Central, Honorable Christopher Magomo, yesterday commissioned newly constructed houses at Mbome Valley Farm.
The homes, built by Eureka Gold Mine, were handed over to 15 families affected by the mine’s expansion, adding to the five homesteads delivered last year.
Each family received a four-roomed house, with a standalone kitchen, a toilet, and a bathroom.
Additionally, beneficiaries were allocated five hectares of farming land and farming inputs valued at $10,700. The mine invested over $485,000 in the construction project as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Minister Magomo commended Eureka Gold Mine for its efforts, stating that the mine had set a positive example compared to others that displaced people without proper resettlement. He urged the mine and the local community to maintain harmony and avoid unnecessary disputes.
Mining, according to the Minister, plays a crucial role in Zimbabwe’s economy, contributing approximately 12% to the GDP. He also praised Eureka Mine for creating 1,200 jobs, 80% of which are held by locals from the district and province.
Mr. Tinago Tinago, Eureka Mine’s Human Capital Resource Manager, emphasized the mine’s commitment to leaving a sustainable legacy for its host communities and the nation.
However, relocated residents urged Mine authorities to fulfill outstanding promises including domestic water, burglar bars for the houses, schools, health facilities, and access roads in the area.
During the ceremony, Chief Chipuriro warned residents against trespassing on mine property, inorder to uphold security concerns as well as encouraging mutual engagement between the community and miners.
