In the quest to ‘leave noone & no place behind’ President Dr ED Mnangagwa through the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water & Rural Development, has urged those who applied for land to check if their names are appearing in the waiting list and confirm if they still want land.
Permanent Secretary in the Min. of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water & Rural Development Professor Obert Jiri said this in a recent address.
New applicants and those verifying their land application details, the Lands Ministry encouraged interested parties to do so before mid-year 2024.
“The waiting list for land applicants is not really in good shape. We would want all applicants who have applied before to come and inspect and check if they are still on the list. We believe that will help us to verify and remove those who have died, those who have already gotten farms, and those who for various reasons no longer want the land.
“The land waiting list needs to be looked at. We will put deadlines and we think that by mid-year this year we should be able to get an updated list of all land applicants,” said Prof Jiri.
The programme is expected to be the last stage as the government finalises the land application waiting list.
Land owners with multiple farms are subject to repossession by the government for allocation to people on the waiting list. This is to allow more people to venture into agriculture.
Prof Jiri assured Zimbabweans that land redistribution process is continuous to ensure Zimbabwe’s farmland is used for the maximum benefit of its citizens.
Since the launch of the Land Reform Programme in 2000, the government has distributed 14 million hectares to over 380 000 families, where 360 000 are A1 farmers and 23 000 A2 farmers.
In 2022, government confirmed that an estimated 260 000 people are on the waiting list for land with 10 000 in the diaspora.
