Cabinet has reviewed updates on the country’s preparations for the upcoming 29th Conference of Parties (COP 29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22, 2024.

The Conference will focus on addressing the urgent challenges posed by climate change.

Speaking at the Post Cabinet briefing yesterday, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Hon. Dr Jenfan Muswere said, “As part of the roadmap to COP 29, the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife will constitute an Inter-Ministerial and cross-sectoral delegation based on the diversity of topics to be negotiated and in some cases, experience in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change; and will organise a National Pre-COP 29 Conference.”

COP 29 is expected to be a crucial meeting for advancing global efforts to combat climate change.

With a particular emphasis on finance, the conference aims to establish a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance that adequately addresses the needs and priorities of developing countries.

His Excellency President Mnangagwa will deliver a keynote address at the COP 29 Plenary, providing the country’s perspective on the urgent need for international cooperation and action to address climate change.

Zimbabwe’s participation in COP 29 aligns with the country’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. By actively engaging in the global climate change discourse, the country seeks to contribute to finding solutions that will mitigate the impacts of climate change and build a more resilient future for generations to come.
