Government gives PSMAS kiss of life

Government has approved a $4 billion rescue package for Premier Service Medical Aid Society, which was facing financial challenges.

The medical insurance group had closed some of its concerns, including West End Hospital due to emergent constraints.

In a statement, Secretary to the Service Commissions Dr Rosemary Choruma said the bailout was designed to bring back operations to full capacity.

“The injection of funds will enable the restoration of operations at the embattled medical insurance group through, among other support, the clearance of salary arrears for PSMI staff,” the statement read.

Dr Choruma said Government is committed to ensure the continued existence of PSMAS, as it serves a significant constituency of public employees.

“This is a clear demonstration of government commitment to the provision of access to health care for public servants, who make up 90% of PSMAS clients,” she added.

Since challenges have been accumulating at the organisation, the bail-out package is part of a broader support by the government to forster normalcy.

“Furthermore, civil servants who subscribe to PSMAS are expected to be able to access healthcare services from the Society’s clinics timeously,” added Choruma

The government is also applauded for purchasing more than US$1million worth of drugs.

Meanwhile, both PSMAS and PSMI are under a forensic audit, which when finalized will inform how further governance matters will be handled.
