The Child Protection Committee in Kwekwe has embarked on an information drive, following the rise in child marriages in the district.

Although the sessions carried discussions on different topics relating to the wellbeing of children, the underlying message was to discourage families from putting their underage daughters up for marriage.

The information party went to Marivale Homestead, a place which is considered a hotspot for child marriages owing to its proximity to places where Apostolic sects assemble.

The most recent case is of a 14 year old who was married off to a prophet in the area.

Efforts by the Child Protection Committee are being supported by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Department of Social Development, Victim Friendly Unit, Ministry of Health and Child Care, Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services and the Zibagwe Rural District Council, among others.

Parliament is in the process of debating child marriages, with sights on adjusting laws to ensure a deterrent sentence to those who are not heeding calls to stop marrying and marrying off children below the legal age of marriage -18.
