GOROMONZI – Hundreds of residents in Goromonzi received free eye examinations and treatment on Friday, as a result of a collaborative outreach program organized by mobile network provider NetOne, in partnership with Zimpost and a non-profit organization, ZimSmart Villages.
The day-long clinic, held at the Goromonzi District Development Coordinator’s office, provided a much-needed service to the community. Dr. Bernard Muchengeti, one of the ophthalmologists volunteering at the event, reported that many adults presented with treatable conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and refractive errors requiring corrective lenses.
“Early detection and treatment are crucial for these conditions,” Dr. Muchengeti emphasized. He also noted that several children received treatment for allergy-related eye problems.
This outreach program is part of a larger initiative by ZimSmart Villages, an organization under the patronage of First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, to bring essential medical services to marginalized communities across Zimbabwe by establishing clinics at post offices. The partnership with NetOne and Zimpost leverages existing infrastructure and resources to reach a wider population.
Local officials praised the initiative, highlighting the ongoing need for accessible healthcare in rural areas. They expressed hope that similar programs will continue to bridge the gap in healthcare access for residents who often lack access to specialized care.
The Goromonzi eye clinic not only provided immediate care to hundreds but also served as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of regular eye check-ups. This successful collaboration between public and private entities offers a promising model for delivering essential services to rural communities in Zimbabwe and closing identified healthcare gaps.
