Yesterday, the First Lady who is also the Health Ambassador, Her Excellency Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, is in Midlands Province at Chief Njelele homestead in Gokwe South for cancer (cervical and breast) screening, treatment and awareness outreach programme.

According to Health Statistics, almost half of all cervical cancers occur in women who have never been screened.

In Africa, cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women and in Zimbabwe, it accounts for a third (33,4%) of all cancers among women.

In her speech, the First Lady and Health Ambassador, Dr Mnangagwa said she is visiting Gokwe South following many concerns that came through her 575 toll-free number.

“Some of the concerns mentioned by women from Gokwe are that they are being discouraged to seek health-care services by some churches, hence the free screening, treatment, and awareness outreach program at Chief Njelele homestead today,” she said.

The First Lady and Health Ambassador Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa also used the opportunity to conduct a cholera awareness campaign.

She educated women that its important to wash their hands thoroughly after using the toilet and, before eating, use treated water, either by boiling it or adding chlorine, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly with clean water.

She also encouraged women to be vigilant when disposing of used diapers.
