Geo Pomona Waste Management, the company currently constructing a waste management plant at Harare`s Pomona Dumpsite, has shared details around the fire which erupted at the facility on Tuesday.

The company released a statement detailing the mishap.

According to the statement, the fire started on October 3 at around 1200 hours and was contained before it could cause extensive damage.

Geo Pomona Waste Management are at this point not ruling out foul play.

“There was a fire incident at the site on the 3rd of October 2022. The origins of the fire are yet to be established and investigations are underway to establish whether it was a natural fire or was a product of saboteurs of the project,” the statement read.

About 30 percent of the dumpsite was destroyed.

“We are pleased to advise that at around 10pm in the evening of the 3rd of October 2022, the flames were fully undercontrol and not as raging as when the fire started,” the statement further statement.

Pomona Dumpsite is notorious for fires, and Geo Pomona Waste say they are investing in systems set to stop the recurrence.

“Geo Pomona Waste management is dedicated to ensuring a pollution free environment and providing sustainable and innovative solutions in waste management.

Environmentally friendly Waste management is at the heart of our organization and defines the project we are currently carrying out. We assure all stakeholders of our commitment to achieving World Class Waste Management at the Pomona Dumpsite,” the statement said.
