A freak fire accident destroyed some property on the second floor of Joina City, one of Harare’s busiest and tallest shopping malls this Tuesday.
The incident occurred at around 7 pm and has since been shared widely on social networks.
An eye-witness identified as Floyd Gushiri confirmed that he noticed the fire on the second floor of the building, that is when he rushed to call security.
“We rushed to the scene with fire extinguishers while we waited for the fire brigade to arrive. Thank God no one was harmed,” he said.
The fire, which has since been contained, is believed to have started within Gotcha Nyama restaurant on the same floor. No casualties have been reported.
The shopping mall houses 72 compartments altogether and is the third tallest at 105m it’s shorter than the NRZ building in Bulawayo (110m) and the RBZ Building (120m).
The building took nearly 16 years to build and its co-owner Shingi Mutasa, says it’s now worth over $100 million.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
Earlier today, Crown Plaza had to force patrons to temporarily evacuate their offices and business after an unattended tub triggered the fire alarm.
