Ministry of Finance and Economic Development is consulting experts from around the world to proffer solutions and recommendations on innovative growth strategies and policies that should contribute to the achievement of the national Vision 2030.

This is a break from the past, where ministries would come up with propositions and policy positions with minimal input from academia and other experienced stakeholders.

Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has issued a call for papers, which will form content for an International Convention on Zimbabwe Economic Growth Strategy: Current Experiences and Way Forward.

The call for papers outlined the objective of the Convention which is poised to become an annual event as, “The objective of the Convention is for stakeholders to engage and deliberate holistically on issues that will impact Zimbabwe’s growth strategies so as to make them more innovative and transformative.

The convention which is poised to become an annual event, will provide evidence based policy analyses which will contribute to the formulation of innovative growth strategies and policies that should contribute to the achievement Of the National Vision 2030.”

The Convention will bring together experts from around the world to discuss and analyze Zimbabwe’s growth strategies and to proffer solutions and recommendations in line with the following broad pillars Informal Sector Development and Poverty Reduction, Industrialization and Trade Policy, Public and Private Investments and Creation of an Enabling Environment for Business, Monetary and Exchange Rate Policy and Fiscal Policy Reforms.

The Ministry said only full contributions addressing all the thematic areas for the Convention will be considered for presentation and also encouraged the submissions to be policy and solution oriented papers that demonstrate strong empirical analysis or evidence based grounding.

The Zimbabwean economy has long ceased to be formal with more than 80 percent of the people engaged in informal trade since the late 90s. It is instructive that Micro-Small to Mediums Enterprises have become important in many countries, because of the role they play in the country’s economic growth.

MSMEs have an important role to play in Zimbabwean development and it is against that background that the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has called for part of the pitch to be on informal sector development and poverty reduction.

Many have been calling on the Government to harness the informal sector and to find a way of incorporating its activities in the mainstream Economy.
Zimbabwe is currently pursuing education 5.0 in which institutions of higher learning have to contribute to national development through offering practical, evidence based solutions to national challenges.

The call by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development shows that there is appetite on Government`s side to bridge the gap.
