Nevanji Munyaradzi Chiondegwa
Catholic priest, father Emmanuel Ribeiro, who was Assistant Chaplain-General of prisons at the time President Mnangagwa was arrested has died.
Father Ribeiro used his influence at the time in 1964, to save President Mnangagwa from the hangman`s noose.
His death was announced by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Nick Mangwana on Twitter this morning.
Mr Mangwana said; “It is sad to learn that Father Emmanuel Ribeiro has passed on in the early hours of this morning. Father Ribeiro was assistant chaplain-general of Prisons at the time President @edmnangagwa was in prison. He was a major player in the design of our National Flag. MHDSRIP”
Apart from saving President Mnangagwa from possible death by hanging, Father Ribeiro assisted the great escape of former President Robert Mugabe and Edgar Tekere to Mozambique.
He also sheltered the late Mugabe and Enos Nkala when they had been just released by Smith as outlaw Political prisoners after 12 years imprisonment.
He designed the country`s national flag and sat on the committee that approved the current national anthem.
