Extended hours for Biometric Voter Registration

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has announced extended working hours for teams deployed for the ongoing mop-up mobile biometric voter registration exercise.
The latest measures are aimed at ensuring that every eligible citizen has an opportunity to register and obtain an identity document ahead of the upcoming elections.
According to a statement released by the electoral body, mobile teams will be deployed to areas that are difficult to reach, including rural areas and remote communities. These teams will travel to different locations within these areas to enable residents to register as voters as well as to acquire Identity Documents without having to travel long distances.
“We recognize that some eligible voters in rural and remote communities face difficulties accessing voter registration centres,” said ZEC Chairperson Loice Matanda Moyo.
“The deployment of mobile teams will help us to overcome these challenges and ensure that every eligible citizen has an opportunity to register and participate in the upcoming elections.”
In addition to the mobile teams, ZEC has also extended the working hours for registration at permanent centres. The centres will now operate from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, including weekends and public holidays, to give more people a chance to register.
“We understand that many people have work and other commitments that may prevent them from registering during normal working hours,” said Moyo.
“By extending the working hours, we hope to give everyone an opportunity to register and obtain an identity document.”
The biometric voter registration exercise, which began in January, is expected to run for several months. The commission has urged all eligible citizens to register and obtain their identity documents in time for the elections.
“We encourage all eligible voters to take advantage of these measures and register to vote,” said ZEC.
“The future of our country depends on the participation of all citizens in the democratic process, and we want to ensure that everyone has a chance to make their voice heard.”
ZEC has assured the public that all COVID-19 protocols will be observed during the registration process, including the wearing of masks, sanitizing, and social distancing.
The commission has urged all citizens to cooperate with the mobile teams and registration centres and to report any cases of malpractice or misconduct.
“We are committed to ensuring a free, fair, and transparent electoral process,” “With the support of all citizens, we can achieve this goal and build a better future for Zimbabwe.”
