A group of men believed to be behind the cowardly attack on Zimbabwean national Elvis Nyathi in April were last week granted bail by Magistrate Hleziphi at the Randburg Magistrates Court.

The alleged killers are; Cedric Raseal (42), Baron Mashele (31), Godfrey Mahlo (31), Thomas Serebane (53), Phumuduza Tshirangwana (38), Thabo Makgatho (32) and Puleng Chipape (34) were granted R3000 bail each.

Nyathi’s cousin Mr Mphathisi Ndlovu told South African media that the family is no longer feeling safe after the granting of the bail.

“We don’t understand why the court decides to give bail to people who killed someone in a brutal way. As the family we are scared,” he said.

Some of Nyathi`s family still in South Africa abstained from attending court, fearing attacks from xenophobes.

Initially, the criminals in connection with Nyathi’s murder were 14, the other seven were released owing lack of evidence.

The remaining seven were granted bail.

The case will be heard on July 7.
