The community of Sheba Farms in Mutokwe Village, Hwedza District, has lost eleven cattle after the animals consumed urea-infused water from a cracked centre pivot at Landos A2 Farm, located in Ward 3.

The cattle reportedly wandered into the farm’s winter wheat fields, searching for water and grazing, as climate change and uncontrolled veld fires have drastically depleted natural resources across the Hwedza district.

It is believed that the urea, used to fertilize the wheat crop, was mixed with the water that leaked from the pivot system.

Assistant Inspector Whisky of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Igava Base confirmed that operatives had discovered eight dead cattle at the site.

By Monday 14 October 2024, the police had requested affected community members to visit the Igava base and make official statements.

However, the complainants, including Mr. Gift Muparadzi, Simbarashe Maradzika, Mr. Kenneth Taderera, all from Mutokwe Village, and Mr. Chivanda from Zana 3, had yet to appear, citing transport challenges.

Government bodies, including the Agriculture Advisory and Rural Development Services, Veterinary Services, and the Civil Protection Unit (CPU), were awaiting full statements from the complainants before further engagements.
