The Ministry of Health and Child Care is on a vaccination drive against elephantiasis and is targeting people from the age of two years and above. Elephantiasis is a parasitic disease which affects the lymph nodes and lymph vessels. It is spread by infectious mosquitoes.

In Mutoko, the campaign started on 16 September 2024 and ended on the 28th of  September 2024.

The whole of Mutoko district was being vaccinated against the disease since a case was detected in that district.

According to Mutoko District Medical Officer, Dr Mangwiro, adequate dissemination about the campaign had been done and people were responding positively.

At Nyamuzuwe Shopping Centre, Mutoko North Constituency, people of different age groups were seen taking the vaccine.

Similarly, a mass drug administration was exercised in Kariba and Mhondoro Ngezi, Mashonaland West province and  ended on September 26, 2024.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says over 882 million people in 44 countries worldwide remain threatened by elephantiasis, also known as lymphatic filariasis, and require preventive chemotherapy to stop the spread of this parasitic infection.
