Eight people feared dead in Gandanzara, Makoni

Eight people are feared dead while eight others are hospitalised after a Passion Link bus carrying pilgrims from Bernard Mizeki caught fire Sunday evening in the Gandanzara area of Makoni district.


The annual pilgrimage takes place at the Bernard Mizeki shrine in Marondera and draws Anglicans from across Zimbabwe, the southern African region, and beyond.


Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident adding that 66 passengers were on board.


Commissioner Nyathi said the incident occurred around 7pm when the bus, which was coming from a church function in Marondera, caught fire, with forensic investigations underway to ascertain the cause of the blaze.


Meanwhile, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Honourable Felix Mhona was at the scene for a fact-finding mission and consoled families of the victims.


He raised concern over the increase in road traffic accidents, adding thorough investigations will be carried out to ascertain compliance to road safety requirements.
