Former Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman and national hero, Dr Mariyawanda Nzuwah, was laid to rest today at the National Heroes Acre in Harare under strict Covid-19 protocols.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa presided over the ceremony.

Dr Mariyo Mariyawanda Nzuwah (68) died at his home in Harare on 21 September 2021 after a short illness.

In his condolences speech, President Emmerson Mnangagwa described Doctor Nzuwah as an eminent academic whose early scholarly works were in nationalist research in support of the liberation struggle.

“An eminent academic, Dr Nzuwah’s early scholarly works were in nationalist research in support of the liberation struggle. As a committed cadre, he placed his professional skills and career at the disposal of the struggle and his country soon after the attainment of our independence,” President Mnangagwa said.

He was among the intellectuals who gave their hearts to Zimbabwe in the pre and post-independence Zimbabwe, helping put systems that covered the vacuum left by white settlers when they left the country in a haste after 1980.

“The late Dr Nzuwah led the PSC until his retirement in 2018. We honour and remember him as a man driven, not only by passion for the development of our great development of our great nations, but by great zeal for developing a sound Civil Service in Zimbabwe,” President Mnangagwa added.

Dr Nzuwah is survived by his wife Janice Marie, three children and grandchildren.
