The Deputy Minister for Sports, Youth, Arts and Recreation Tinoda Machakaire has sent a message of condolence to the Shaya family following the death of soccer legend George Shaya.
Shaya died on Monday morning after a long illness.
Deputy Minister Machakaire described Shaya`s death as a loss for greater Zimbabwe.
“My deepest condolences to the Shaya family and the entire football fraternity on the untimely passing on of the legend George Shaya. We have been robbed as a nation and we cherish the legacy and the memories that he leaves behind. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” said Deputy Minister Machakaire.
Zvishavane giants FC Platinum have also sent their condolence message.
“Our hearts and prayers are with the Shaya family and the entire football community. We express our heartfelt ‘Condolences on the passing on of Football legend Gorge Shaya. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the club wrote.
Shaya played for Dynamos FC during the colonial era and established himself as the best player by winning the soccer star award five times.
His former club has written to ZIFA, requesting the late footballer be accorded a national hero status.
Mourners are gathered at the Shaya family house in Glennorah.
