Department of Disability Affairs Works to Promote Inclusive Society.
The Department of Disability Affairs in the Ministry of Public Service Labour and Social Welfare held a meeting yesterday with people living disability at Harare Polytechnic College.
The purpose of the meeting was to sensitise them about government facilities and programs designed to benefit everyone, including them. This is in line with President Mnangagwa’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind.
Speaking at the event Department of Disability Affairs Director, Dr. Peta said the government is committed to promoting the welfare of people living with disability.
“In June 2021, the government enacted the National Disability Policy and also that a Disability Bill is currently before the parliament in a bid to promote the rights of the disabled people.”
Dr. Peta mentioned the Basic Education Assistance Model (BEAM) and Health Care Assistance facility, which she said are also meant to benefit them.”
She also talked about the Ruwa National Rehabilitation Centre, where 16 courses, including carpentry,horticulture, computers, and motor vehicle maintenance, are offered for free to people living with disability.
Dr. Peta condemned drug and substance abuse, which has become prevalent among the youths. She implored the gathering not to engage in drug abuse in order to avoid mental disability and high-risk sexual activities.
She also emphasised that people with disability have a role to play in the development of the nation.
Present at the event were representatives from the Empowerment and Women’s banks who taught the gathering of the various loan facilities they can take advantage of and uplift their lives.
The crowd received 10kg of mealie meal each courtesy of the First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa.
