President Emmerson Mnangagwa has encouraged Zimbabweans to honour the sacrifice made by fallen and living heroes during the liberation struggle by defending that Independence in this coming election.
President Mnangagwa said this while addressing mourners gathered at National Heroes Acre this morning, where they laid to rest Cde Abraham Kabasa.
“The 2023 Harmonised General Elections are around the corner. As patriotic Zimbabweans, we must go out in our numbers to vote in defence of the Independence brought about by cadres such as Cde Kabasa.
“As we prepare for the elections, I once again call upon every Zimbabwean to say no to violence. We want peace before, during, and after the election period,” said President Mnangagwa.
He described the late Cde Abraham Kabasa as a brave cadre who inspired many young freedom fighters with the will to challenge the racist regime.
“This crop of pioneering nationalists who helped ignite the Second Phase of our struggle of independence and black majority rule,” he said.
In a moving tribute, President Mnangagwa said the nation had lost one of the stalwarts of the protracted liberation struggle.
“The late national hero Cde Kabasa was a certified nurse who participated in the national resistance against the colonial injustices of the racist Rhodesian regime. He also contributed to nation-building in post-independence Zimbabwe, rising to become the provincial chairman of our revolutionary party Zanu PF in Mashonaland East province,” said President Mnangagwa.
Cde Kabasa was a member of the Zanu PF National Consultative Assembly and former provincial Governor for Mashonaland East.
He died on April 29. The burial was attended by people from the Government, the ruling Zanu PF, war veterans, diplomats accredited to Zimbabwe, service chiefs, relatives and friends.
