The last apartheid ruler of South Africa and leader of the National Party Frederik Willem de Klerk has died.

He was 85.

De Klerk, who won a joint Nobel Peace Price with Nelson Mandela was a key actor in the country’s transition to democracy.
His death was announced by his foundation.

“Mr de Klerk, who was also at one point deputy President to Mandela was diagnosed with cancer early this year,” a spokesman said.

Mr de Klerk was head of state between September 1989 and May 1994.

He is famed for dismantling apartheid and introducing universal adult suffrage.

De Klerk is famed for releasing Mandela from prison and apologising to Madiba on behalf of the South African Government.
