More details are emerging on the lone Victoria Falls robber, who has since gone viral after executing a solo robbery mission.
The robber who walked away with an estimated US$12 000 after pouncing on ZB Victoria Falls branch this Wednesday, fled the scene through the back exit.
Initially the figure was understood to be around US$100 000, but was later clarified through a police statement.
The gunmen walked into the banking hall pretending to be a client and was wearing a wool hat and a face mask.
At the beginning of the heist, the suspect had posed as a genuine customer and inquired about the requirements to apply for a bank loan from bank staff.
According to the ZRP said that as the bank was about to close for the day, the suspect remained behind while other customers were leaving.
He made sure that all the other customers had left before brandishing an unknown pistol and robbing the bank of US$12 000.
“As the bank was about to close for the day, the suspect remained behind while other customers were leaving. After all the other customers had left, he produced a pistol and ordered the bank tellers to surrender cash in their tills,” the ZRP explained.
Efforts are being made to account for the suspect.
Cases of armed robbery are on the increase, in January last year, a cash-in-transit ZB Bank vehicle was robbed of US$2.7 million and $43 000 at Gwebi River Bridge along the Harare-Chirundu Road.
The robbery was believed to have been an inside job where three security personnel in the vehicle allegedly connived with robbers.
Recently, a Kwekwe fuel service station lost over half a million United States dollars to armed robbers.
Government has come up with a solution, of ensuring that private guards are trained under the Zimbabwe Republic Police, to allow for better responses to such situations.
