Covid-19: Zimbabwe continues to count gains

Zimbabwe’s covid-19 recovery rate is at 94 percent with 654 active cases, while the number of new cases continues to decline in response to the national efforts to contain infection from the coronavirus.

At yesterday`s post-cabinet briefing; Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said as of 6 April 2021, Zimbabwe had 36966 positive cumulative cases, 1531 deaths and 34781 recoveries.

She also communicated Government`s decision to save casinos, which are a critical service provider in the hospitality industry.

“In light of this positive information, casinos which have been closed since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020 will be allowed to re-open with strict observance of Covid-19 guidelines. Those found disregarding the guidelines will have their licences revoked,” she said.

Meanwhile the citizens of Zimbabwe continue to show a positive attitude towards the Zimbabwe Vaccination Program as many are going in their numbers to receive the jab.

“With regard to the Covid-19 vaccination roll-out programme, as of 6 April 2021, a total of 133992 people had received their first dose and 23432 had received their second dose of the vaccine,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

“Following reports of production of fake vaccination cards by unscrupulous individuals, Government in liaison with Fidelity Printers and the Registrar Generals’ Office has strengthened security measures through designing a water-tight Vaccination Certificate Card. The Card which will be printed by Fidelity Printers will exhibit an invisible coat of arms that shines under ultra-violet light, fluorescent numbering, water-marked security paper, micro text underground and guilloche pattern. Government will leave no stone unturned in apprehending greedy malcontents bend on tampering with the security features of the Vaccination Cards,” she highlighted.

In continued efforts to achieve at least 60 percent herd immunity, the Government of Zimbabwe plans to purchase one million Covid-19 vaccines a month in the second quarter henceforth starting from the end of April to the end of June, a million doses, which will be fully paid for, will be arriving in the country.
