Classroom block collapses into mine shaft
At least seven learners at Globe and Phoenix Primary school in Kwekwe’s Central Business District, Midlands Province have been reported injured after a classroom block collapsed into a mine shaft on Thursday morning.
Last year the school was forced to decommission some of its classroom blocks after the school came under siege from illegal gold panners who were randomly digging within its premises.
Illegal gold panners laid siege on the school after a rumour made rounds that rich good deposits had been discovered in and around the school premises.
Despite police presence around the school at that time, most fortune hunters never left the school vicinity, rather they changed tac and began burrowing under the school premises in search of the precious yellow metal, resulting in the latest unfortunate incident.
Kwekwe metropolitan is home to some of the country’s richest gold deposits and as such there are many illegal artisanal and small-scale miners from all over the country who engage in extractive activities.
