Chitungwiza Municipality is enforcing a raft of by-laws which will see them institute a crackdown against properties with unregistered boreholes.
The dormitory town struggles with water, in some areas they have gone for years without any water from their taps.
This has seen the increased prevalence in boreholes and wells as peple seek to find dignified alternatives to council alternatives.
However, in a notice, Chitungwiza Town Council said they are going to be penalizing all boreholes drilled without their approval.
The Town Council also expressed intention to tow away all vehicles that are parked at undesignated car parks spreading across the town.
“The new measures that will be implemented will include penalizing owners of illegal structures, introducing a US$1 per day penalty for all vendors, US$5 penalty fee for those selling sofas and introduction of storage fees after an hour of vehicle impounding,” the notice read.
These measures are said to be in line with the Municipality’s goal of a smart heritage city by 2030.
“The municipality will also enforce compliance of renewal of 2023 licenses, tow all vehicles parked at unregistered car parks, and enforce fire extinguishers, gas and flammable liquid transporters. All those that drill boreholes without Council approval or damage Council infrastructure will be penalized. Perimeter or boundary walls encroaching original stand pegs will be demolished,” the notice stated.
