Chirundu bus accident claims seven

Seven people perished on the spot while scores sustained serious injuries when two buses collided head-on in a freak accident near Chirundu yesterday.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) National Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the fatal accident which occurred at the 101km peg along the Harare-Chirundu highway.
“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident that occurred earlier today (yesterday) at 0745 hours at the 101km peg along the Harare-Chirundu Road between Banket and Chinhoyi near Dondo River Bridge where seven people died after two ZUPCO buses collided head-on,” said Assistant Nyathi.
The accident occurred when the other bus, travelling from Harare to Kariba tried to double overtake an omnibus and a haulage truck, whilst the other one was proceeding in the opposite direction. Both drivers died on the spot and were trapped in the wreckage of the two buses while five passengers died.
Meanwhile 32 passengers sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital.
