Chad President Idris Deby has died from injuries suffered on the frontline, an army spokesperson has confirmed.
President Deby won an election held on April 11.
He deferred his inauguration, opting to fight insurgents.
President Idriss Déby Itno had been in power for 30 years.
“President Idriss Deby has just breathed his last while defending the sovereign nation on the battlefield over the weekend,” army spokesman General Azem Bermandoa Agouna said in a statement read out on state television.
He was 68.
Meanwhile, General Mahamat Deby Kaka, the 37-year old son of the late President has been named interim Head of State of Chad by the military Deby Kaka, a four-star General, will head the country for the next 18 months leading a military council.
