HARARE – President Dr. ED Mnangagwa has declared the late Brigadier-General (Rtd) Elasto Madzingira a National Hero.

Born in 1959, Brigadier-General Madzingira’s life was marked by both academic excellence and unwavering dedication to his nation. A recipient of the prestigious World Services scholarship in 1977, he chose to pursue a Pharmacy Degree at the then University of Rhodesia. However, his commitment to Zimbabwe’s liberation led him to abandon his studies in 1978 and join the struggle under the nom-de-guerre “Ronald Zvenyika.”

At independence in 1985, he joined the Air Force of Zimbabwe as a Flight Lieutenant, steadily rising through the ranks to Squadron Leader (1987), Wing Commander (1989), and finally Group Captain (1992). A tragic injury sustained in the line of duty in 1992 left him wheelchair-bound. He was subsequently transferred to the Zimbabwe National Army and promoted to Brigadier-General upon retirement.

Brigadier-General Madzingira’s distinguished service earned him numerous accolades, including the Independence Medal, 10 Years Service Medal, Mozambique Campaign Medal, Liberation Medal, and Long and Exemplary Medal.

He is survived by his wife, Sarudzai, and six children.
