An underground gas explosion at a mine in Mazowe has left seven dead.

According to witnesses the incident, which happened at Sasai Mine yesterday, was caused by an oxygen gas tank malfunction, which saw it explode into a ball of fire.

The victims are six Chinese nationals and one local child.

Mazowe South Member of Parliament Fortune Chasi confirmed the incident.

“Very sad development at Saisai mine Mazowe South Ward 20. Oxygen tanks burst killing several people who include 1 child, 6 Chinese workers,” said Chasi.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) through its spokesperson, Assistant commissioner Paul Nyathi said they are investigating circumstances surrounding the blast.

“The ZRP is investigating the circumstances in which six foreign nationals as well as Zimbabwean died when some gas cylinders exploded at SAS mine, lowdale on 07 October 2021. One person was critically injured and is currently admitted at a local hospital,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.

In the same province last year in Bindura at least 40 informal miners were trapped underground after a shaft in a disused gold mine collapsed.
