An unidentified male passenger died a few minutes away from landing at Joshua Mqabukho Nkomo airport in Bulawayo.
He was aboard an Airlink flight from Johannesburg.
The passenger who had a valid Covid-19 negative certificate which was still within the mandatory 48hrs validity did not show any signs of being unwell during the one hour flight from the neighbouring country.
The incident happened this afternoon.
Mr Passmore Dewa who is the Airport manager at Joshua Mqabukho Nkomo International Airport confirmed the incident to this publication.
He however said that health services personnel were called in to supervise removal of the body in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines.
“I can confirm that we had an unfortunate incident where a male passenger died mid-air, which was confirmed by health personnel once the plane landed.
We will get reports from the airline, law enforcement agencies and also health authorities into the incident which will answer questions over how the passenger died,” said Dewa.
It is suspected that the passenger could have had some undeclared underlying chronic medical conditions that got complicated mid-air.
“The passenger had a test certificate taken 48hrs before travelling, showing that he was Covid-19 free as required by the Zimbabwean Covid-19 regulations,” concluded Dewa.
