Yesterday, Deputy Minister Yeukai Simbanegavi, representing the Minister of Energy and Power Development, Cde E. Moyo, inaugurated the Mutsinzwa, Kudadisa, and Chirorwe Electrification Project in Bikita.
The project was initiated on February 8, 2023, and completed by June 13, 2023, this project features a 12km, 33kv power line. Beneficiaries include Mutsinzwa business center, Kudadisa Secondary School, Chirorwe Primary School, Chirorwe Clinic, Chirorwe business center, ZINWA offices, and RIDA offices.
In his speech, Minister Moyo emphasized the critical role of electricity in driving industrialization, modernization, economic development, and improving living conditions. He highlighted the historical neglect of rural electrification by the colonial government, which favored urban areas and large commercial farms.
However, post-independence in 1980 marked a shift towards prioritizing electricity provision for marginalized rural communities.
Minister Moyo underscored the importance of the Rural Electrification Fund (REF), a key parastatal mandated to promote rural electrification and energy provision in various forms. He noted that approximately 70% of Zimbabwe’s population resides in rural areas, making the REF’s mission vital. He also stressed the Ministry’s role in achieving national vision through sustainable energy
