The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) Mobile registration outreach has been marred by intermittent power supply situation which is currently being experienced countrywide as well as bad weather which has negatively affected functionality of critical equipment for the registration exercise.

In an announcement on Tuesday, ZEC reiterated its commitment to reaching out to all hard-to-reach corners of the country in it’s quest to leave no one and no place behind in the current effort to get everyone on board as registered voters.

“The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) hereby notifies the public that it is currently experiencing technical difficulties at some of it’s registration centres.”

“This is due to shortages of electricity affecting the charging of (Biometric Voter Registration) BVR kits. The situation is also worsened by the cloudy weather which affects the solar powered BVR kits. ZEC assures the public that every eligible citizen will be registered,” read the statement .

ZEC launched a ten day final twin voter registration blitz, running from March 12-22, 2023 which sees the election management body collaborate with the Registrar-General’s Office which becomes the first part of call for citizens who require national identity documents before they are subsequently get registered as voters.

The current voter registration blitz is particularly important as it targets mostly marginalised communities which have limited access to established permanent voter registration centres as well as those areas which are technologically disadvantaged. The mobile voter registration seeks to reduce distances travelled by prospective voters to access registration services, a factor that contributes to voter apathy.

Meanwhile ZEC announced extended operating hours for it’s outreach officers as they race against time to attain the goal of capturing data for all eligible citizens who deserve a chance to exercise their right to vote.
