Auditor General pins hopes on performance contracts

The Auditor General Mrs Mildred Chiri says performances contracts introduced by Government for Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and State Enteprise heads are likely to result in better compliance with recommendations of her reports.
Over the years, the AG’s reports have flagged financial improbity but entities have not been forthcoming in implementing recommendations.
Engaging media at the end of a two-day workshop with journalists in Nyanga today Mrs Chiri bemoaned low compliance among public office holders.
“We are encouraged by the performance based contracts which judge public office holders based on how they achieve set targets. One of the targets is implementing recommendations from our audits and we believe we are likely to see better compliance,” AG Chiri said.
She said her office has intentions to get more members of the public to participate in the setting of priorities for the audit reports as well as the review process.
“We want to take our audit reports to the people. This is why we are introducing summary of the reports in local languages to make sure there is more access,” said AG Chiri.
AG Chiri has been Zimbabwe’s accountability champion, yearly producing detailed reports which flag departments’ spending.
However, her hard work has been undone by poor follow up by affiliate agencies like the Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission and the Special Anti Corruption Unit.
This year promises to be different, as ZACC Spokesperson Commissioner John Makamure said they are already preparing dockets from the recently released 2020 report.
