AU Chair congratulates Hichilema

Moussa Faki Mahamat, the African Union Chairperson has congratulated Zambian President-elect, Mr Hakainde Hichilema for winning the recently held general elections.

The Chairperson also congratulated outgoing President Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu for demonstrating “strong leadership and statesmanship” through acceptance of elections outcomes.

“The Chairperson wishes to warmly congratulate H.E Hakainde Hichilema upon his election as President-elect of the Republic of Republic Zambia following the successful conduct of general elections held In 12 August 2021,” said Mahamat in a statement.

“The Chairperson also commends outgoing President H.E Edgar Lungu for his tenure and demonstrating strong leadership and statesmanship through his gracious acceptance of the outcome of the elections”.

The AU Chairperson took the opportunity to congratulate the Electoral Commission of Zambia and all stakeholders for their collective efforts in the successful conduct of peaceful elections.

The Chairperson reiterated the African Union Commission’s commitment to continue supporting the Republic of Zambia in its journey to deepen the country’s democratic and participative governance credentials.

Immediate past President, Edgar Lungu yesterday afternoon, in a televised speech, accepted defeat and congratulate his counterpart and President-elect Hakainde Hichilema in a show of maturity and commitment to peaceful transition and co-existence.

The recent Zambian elections have been hailed as a manifestation of maturing African democracy as the election environment was judged to have been relatively peaceful and permitting for unhindered participation by all eligible persons.
