South Africa`s ruling party, the African National Congress has joined its sister revolutionary party, ZANU PF in openly calling for the removal of illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe.

Today in Sandton Johannesburg, ANC members from five zones gathered at the United States consulate where they handed over a petition to the American government seeking the lifting of punitive sanctions against Zimbabwe.

In an invitational letter, which gathered men and women for the picket ANC Johannesburg Region Secretary, Dada Morero invited 25 members from each zone to stand in solidarity with Zimbabwe.

“The ANC in Gauteng will be picketing at the USA Consulate in Sandton, Johannesburg to issue a memorandum for the lifting of sanctions against Zimbabwe. We kindly request each of the above mentioned zones to provide 25 members to attend the picket,” the letter read.

The demonstration started at 09:30 in the morning and ran until 13:00 hours.

This is not the first time that South Africa has called for the lifting of sanctions against Zimbabwe.

The South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa in his address to the United Nations General Assembly called for the unconditional removal of sanctions on Zimbabwe.

More recently, South Africa`s Foreign Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor has instituted a fresh study to understand the effect of sanctions on Zimbabwe and has spoken out against them.
