Analysis: Behold, America`s wolf in wolves` clothing
• Zimbabwe a sophisticated destination for US diplomacy
Hosia Mviringi
The recent nomination by US President Joseph Biden of Ms Pamela Tremont to take over the long-vacant Ambassadorial role in Harare is yet another confirmation that Zimbabwe remains a hard target for regime change.
On June 22, 2022, Zimbabweans woke up to the news that a top serving member of the US Intelligence Department, the CIA, had been nominated to take up the post of Ambassador Extraordinaire Plenipotentiary to represent Mr Joe Biden at Harare’s Westgate Compound.
This is perhaps the clearest sign yet that the US is not relenting on its regime change agenda in Zimbabwe.
If anything it shows how determined the US government is to dispatch the ZANU PF government by any means possible, covert or overt, and to install a puppet regime which will serve its imperial interests.
For starters, Ms Pamela Tremont is one of the most qualified, experienced and very active Intelligence operatives who has seen duty as a diplomat and Political Counsellor in such countries as Sweden where she is currently attached as Deputy Chargé d’Affairs for 18 months, and Kyiev, Ukraine where she served as Deputy Chief of Mission, and Cyprus.
Tremont has served as Director for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Policy in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at State Department.
She served as the Economic/Political Counsellor at the US Embassy in Lusaka Zambia and a Political-Military Officer at the US Embassy in London, the United Kingdom, a position she also held in Ankara, Turkey.
Looking at her public CV, and possibly a lot more that is unpublished, it all points out to a potentially bumpy road for Zimbabwe’s relations with the US as it is clear that all other previous Ambassadors will prove to be child’s play as compared to this one.
Ambassadors extraordinary and plenipotentiary are diplomats of the highest rank, formally representing their head of state, with plenipotentiary powers, that is, full authority to represent the government.
They are fully empowered to make independent decisions that are deemed to be in the best interests of the state they represent.
Inasmuch as they are Ambassadors like my other, they operate in a semi-autonomous manner, empowering them to act accordingly as in a state of emergency.
Taking a look at the previous US Ambassadors to Zimbabwe, one is left convinced how seriously the US takes Zimbabwe and how determined they are to accomplish their mission of regime change in Zimbabwe during the tenure of this highly rated diplomat and intelligence operative.
Thus Zimbabwe should brace for very long cold winter with the presence of Ms Pamela Tremont.
Looking at how long the US has gone without a substantive Ambassador in Zimbabwe tells a story of a highly specialised woman that Pamela Tremont is, whose skill and acumen may not easily be replicated, who most likely still had a mission to accomplish elsewhere.
Exactly 12 months after the unceremonious departure of Ambassador Brian Andre Nichols in August 2021, in comes one who promises to be another Brian Nichols and more!
When we thought that we had seen a meddlesome, divisive, hypocritical and shameless regime change agent and diplomat in Mr Brian Nichols, then we can hold on until Madam Tremont descends upon the land of Nehanda and Kaguvi.
As Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Tremont will carry clear instructions from the US President to ‘do whatever it takes’ to accomplish the unfulfilled mission, that is driving the regime change agenda.
It thus becomes entirely up to the people of Zimbabwe to rise up to the occasion, up their game and protect that which they hold dear, their sovereignty, right to self determination and ability to self defend.
The arrival of Ms Tremont to Zimbabwe, most tentatively towards the highly anticipated harmonised elections in 2023, will present Zimbabwe in general and ZANU PF in particular with one of its toughest challenges as more friction will be created between the two Siamese twins across the Zambezi river.
Having been a Political/Economic Counsellor at the US Embassy in Lusaka Zambia, she appears to be an architect to forerunner to the recent establishment of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) Command post or Office (whatever name they choose) within the US Embassy in Lusaka.
It won’t be surprising that some of that office’s activities within the region including across the river into Zimbabwe will be overseen by Ms Tremont.
This is critical for Zimbabwe to anticipate.
What with the potential discovery of massive gas and oil in Kanyemba District which borders Zambia? Won’t this potential find make Zimbabwe a ripe and ready candidate for destabilisation?
I am convinced that all these scenarios are possible and that all options must remain on the table to deal with them as they come.
Zimbabwe cannot ignore credible reports that Western embassies in Zimbabwe are funding formation and training of a paramilitary wing within the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change structures whose insurgents are currently undergoing training in a neighbouring country.
One cannot resist connecting these reports to the imminent arrival of one experienced intelligence operative who has probably seen multiple government overthrows in her course of work.
It goes without saying that with the arrival of Ms Tremont Zimbabwe’s security sector face one of its toughest challenges since Operation Sovereign Legitimacy (OSLEG).
