South Africa’s Airlink has launched a daily direct return flights linking Johannesburg and Victoria Falls.
The maiden flight has been scheduled for next Monday.
Airlink will be running daily flights, adding to a list of over seven airlines already landing at the Victoria Falls International Airport.
The continued increase in airlines coming to Zimbabwe and servicing the Victoria Falls route has been seen by observers as a product of this country`s tourism strategy, which has been focused on re-positioning the country as a safe post-Covid destination.
Tourism was the hardest hit by Covid-19, which saw industry players shutting down and airlines suspending flights due to international travel restrictions.
The industry is now picking up as evidenced by increased demand for airlines services hence the increased frequencies.
Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) Matabeleland North Province Representative, Ms Tsikadzashe Mberi and Tourism Business Council of Zimbabwe Representative, Ms Barbra Murasiranwa says the new flight will improve air connectivity between Victoria Falls and markets.
“This is adding capacity considering that most of our tourists connect via Johannesburg and we are really excited because this is going to help connectivity in Victoria Falls and into Zimbabwe generally,” she said.
Airports Company of Zimbabwe Representative, Mr Ronnie Masawi added, “We are so excited about this airline. It is now adding on to arrivals and this is what is exciting the industry. We used to receive about 900 passengers from the airlines before others moved out. This one has come in and is very exciting, it means we are building up to where we used to be before COVID-19,
“Victoria Falls is very popular with Johannesburg traffic and definitely we are happy that our passengers have more choices to choose from on this sector,” he said.
The privately-owned regional airline flights will operate using a modern 98-seat Embraer E-190 jetliner which is set to depart Johannesburg at 11.30 and touch down in Victoria Falls at 13.15 daily.
Airlink is a regional airline serving a comprehensive network of more than 45 destinations throughout Southern Africa offering our customers more freedom, more choices, and more travel opportunities with more connectivity than any other airline in Southern Africa.
It is the second-largest carrier within Africa by number of flights, and third-largest by number of seats.
Other airlines landing in Victoria Falls are Fastjet which flies to Johannesburg, Mpumalanga, Maun and Harare, Mack Air to Kasane, Kenyan Airways from Nairobi to Cape Town via Victoria Falls, Eurowings from Frankfurt via Victoria Falls, Air Zimbabwe connecting Harare and Bulawayo as well as Kuva from Harare.
