Government through the Infrastructural Development Bank (IDBZ) is building a massive hostel for students at National University of Science and Technology.

According to the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services;

“When complete, the complex will cater for for 1 023 students occupying a total of 512 double rooms. The facility will offer accommodation to students at tertiary institutions in Bulawayo. The complex will also offer a commercial centre comprising a food court with fast food outlets, grocery shops, gym bookshops, bank, pharmacy, laundromat and a supermarket.”

As with other construction projects, the project has been negatively affected by disruptions in work and supply chains as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resultant national lockdowns.

Similar projects are being pursued at other universities such as Bindura University of Science Education, Chinhoyi University of Technology, Great Zimbabwe University and Lupane State University.

Currently, only 15 percent of students at State universities have accommodation at campus halls of residents while the rest rely on lodgings in areas surrounding the universities.

This project is another one which the Government is embarking on to provide safe and easily accessible housing for students in Tertiary education.

It is also in line with the National Development Strategy (NDS1) and Vision 2030.
