In a rare sequence of events, an ambulance driver, an escort nurse, a pregnant teenager and a middle aged male patient yesterday lost their lives in a horrific accident when the ambulance that was ferrying them from Karoi District Hospital to Chinhoyi Hospital collided with a two-tonne truck along the Harare-Chirundu Highway.
The quartet comprised of Laurance Lundu (ambulance driver), Marjury Matutu (escort nuse), two patients were a pregnant Patricia Murisa (18) and Tichaona Mutashu (47).
Murisa and Mutashu had survived another car accident earlier, only escaping with injuries, and they were being transferred to a bigger medical facility at Chinhoyi Hospital, which is the Mashonaland West referral hospital.
The truck is said to have been on its way to Kariba.
Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident saying the ambulance encroached the road onto the oncoming truck’s lane.
The truck driver identified as Ryan Murembe tried to avoid a head on collision by moving to the right but was still hit by the ambulance.
Ryan Murembe fled the scene.
He had two passengers who sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Karoi Hospital.
