The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East Province Hon. Senator Appolonia Munzverengwi recently commissioned a string of devolution-funded projects in Hwedza district.
The Hon. Minister, who was accompanied by Hwedza North Legislator Adv. Itayi Ndudzo, Hwedza Rural District Council Chairperson Ward One Councilor Mrs. Sheila Mugabe and heads of government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, commissioned Guruuswa Secondary School Block in Ward One, Tongogara Secondary School classroom block and staff accommodation for teachers in Ward Four and Hwedza New Flea Market in Ward Fifteen.
In her address to the Chad community, Hon. Munzverengwi applauded the HRDC for exemplifying how “no place and no one should be left behind” in this new era of constant development and urged the local authority to continue expanding the school, together with the Chad community.
The School, (Chad Guruuswa Secondary School) is positioned in a new resettlement area with a population of 496 households accessing the nearest Secondary Schools at Bolton and Numwa, approximately 20km away from the community.
The project acts as a satellite school of Numwa Secondary School with student establishment of 130 pupils.
While funding towards Chad Guruuswa Classroom block was received from Inter-governmental transfer funds, the Honourable Minister lauded the local community for mobilizing locally available resources.
The newly constructed classroom block significantly improves the learning environment in relation to science subjects, bringing education services closer to the Chad community and will hold a positive bearing on the pass rate.
Hon Minister Munzverengwi applauded the local authority for the fine craftsmanship and urged the HRDC to continue the good work.
The commissioned Tongogara Secondary School is situated in an old resettlement area with a population of 200 households with the nearest Secondary Schools, Magamba, Chigwedere and Gotora which are approximately 12km away from the farming community.
The project commenced in 2022 and acts as a satellite school for
Chigwedere Secondary School with an enrolment of 85 pupils. The area is a farming community and most inhabitants depends on subsistence farming. Funding towards Tongogara Classroom block was received from Inter-governmental transfer funds and the local community mobilized locally available resources.
The newly constructed classroom block further advances the learning environment in relation to IT and science subjects.
The tour also included Hwedza New Flea Market at the heart of the district where SMEs witnessed its commissioning by Senator Munzverengwi. The new flea market which is part of a Public Private Partnership between the local authority and the vending community, to create a suitable environment for SMEs growth in the CBD, boasts ninety stalls and a public toilet.
Minister Munzverengwi urged SMEs to organize themselves in an orderly fashion and indicated the second republic’s commitment to supporting economic growth by small and medium players.
The project rectifies the mushrooming of illegal SMEs trading on undesignated sites coupled with increase in demand for workstations. Forty Seven SMEs contributed their funds towards the construction of the structure with implementation of the project accelerating under the Second Republic, through the disbursement of Inter-governmental Funds.
The Hon. Minister also highlighted that “to date Council has registered up to 500 SMEs across the district in business centers such as, Hwedza growth point, Dendenyore business center, Goto business center, and Garabha business center. This Hwedza Flea market will benefit 96 SMEs trading in various wares. To close the gap in demand for workspace, the Local authority resolved to provide such facility in all the business centers.”
Cde. Munzverengwi also indicated the importance of Economic growth as a component in the achievement of NDS1, in the country’s bid to become an Upper Middle Income Economy by 2030.
She applauded the council for demonstrating its commitment to providing effective and efficient services to the residents of Hwedza District and beyond.
Hon. Itayi Ndudzo urged the beneficiaries of the project to guard it jealously and avoid vandalism of the property as the new dispensation, through local authorities, pushes to provide essential services to all corners of the country.
