Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi has welcomed Zimbabwe into the fold of countries manning the newly commissioned Kazungula Bridge which is connecting Zimbabwe and Botswana.
During the official commissioning ceremony of the Kazungula Bridge yesterday, President Masisi highlighted the new development saying;
“I am happy to note that the Republic of Zimbabwe, ourselves and Zambia have agreed in Principle to be a partner in this project and our officials are working and will work increasingly faster and harder to complete the remaining works for Zimbabwe.”
President Masisi`s speech cemented the words of the President Emmerson Mnangagwa who also was in attendance.
President Mnangagwa first mentioned the new development during the commissioning of the 6.5 km rehabilitated section of the Makuti-Chirundu road in Chirundu last week highlighting that Zimbabwe under the 2nd Republic was now part of the Kazungula Bridge
“During this month, I will be joining the Presidents of Botswana and Zambia at Kazungula to commission the Kazungula Bridge. With the coming in of the new dispensation, Zimbabwe came on board, the project and the bridge is now owned by three countries,” he said.
This is indeed a milestone achievement in the SADC region and Zimbabwe being part of it is a sign of how the 2nd republic is working tirelessly to meet Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy (NDS1).
As part of the deal, Zimbabwe will pay a apportion for the development of the US$259.3 million project as well as expeditiously widen the Victoria Falls-Kasane road that will ensure the country benefits from the traffic coming from either Botswana or Zambia riding on its centrality as the regional hub
While delivering his speech at the ceremony in Kazungula, President Emmerson Mngangagwa not only extended his congratulatory message but also went on to say,
“This is indeed a milestone achievement I the SADC region. I wish to sincerely thank my dear brothers and colleagues, President Masisi and President Lungu who in 2018 extended an invitation to Zimbabwe to be part of this great venture. In fullness of time, Zimbabwe will be part of this project which will accelerate our regional integration efforts.”
